FRIDAY JUNE 28: EXTRA!
STORY and PHOTOGRAPHY: Andrew Green

hindrance of disguise. Many a time you end up
discovering someone you can look up to, someone who holds a special place in your memory.
For me that person is Toni O'Boyle.

Toni was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but later she moved to Madison. She is a R.Ph (registered Pharmacist) and worked on the 1985-1987 University of Wisconsin Transplant team. Originally, this exceptional woman came here as an exhibitor for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals(tm). You may remember her as the lady handing out stopwatches at her wooden, carpeted booth.

After the exhibits had been packed and her colleges had left, she felt somewhat out-of-place. She looked around her and thought that she needed to do something else. She needed to help these exceptional people in more ways than just making medicine. So, Toni became a games volunteer. Now she covers basketball and many other sports.

Toni is a great person; someone who will go above and beyond to help and cure hundreds of transplant recipients. If you're out at an athletic competition and see her (and her complete pin collection!) make sure you thank her. Thank the woman who tries every day to promote organ donation and transplantation. I have tons and tons of great things to say about her.

"This is my first time attending the U.S., Transplant Games. These are some of my observations:

"Organ donation dramatically changes recipient's lives. Some will never inject insulin again. Others will not spend another single moment hooked up to a dialysis machine. Still others will breathe easier.

"The donors and donor families benefit in a different way. Living donors are so happy to have improved the recipient's quality of life. The donor families are able to experience a miracle as they go through their pain of losing a loved one.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed myself this week. I believe that if more people realized the possible effects of organ donation, they would be compelled to participate in some way. I know that I will do what I can do to promote this life-saving cause."
