The organization
and its mission:
WRTC is the federally designated organ procurement organization
for the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. WRTC is the official link between
organ and tissue donors and the patients who are waiting for transplants.
Unique or
creative organ donation promotion strategies:
Recently partnered with fellow Mid-Atlantic Coalition on Donation members
and a company called Sports America to sponsor the second annual DeMatha Invitational.
The DeMatha Invitational is a high quality high school basketball event held
at the MCI Center in downtown Washington. DeMatha is a perennial powerhouse
and is coached by 1996 liver recipient Morgan Wootten, who holds celebrity
status in the area after 42 years of coaching and 1,000+ victories. This year's
feature game pitted DeMatha against Anderson High School of Anderson, Ind.,
coached by fellow liver recipient Ron Hecklinski. Both teams were ranked in
the top 15 by USA Today heading into the event. The event provided a captive
audience of 10,000 people and the publicity surrounding the games - there
were three other contests the day of DeMatha vs. Anderson - included ESPN's
SportsCenter, Sports Illustrated, NBC's George Michael Sports Machine and
numerous local network spots.
