The organization and its mission:
Upstate New York Transplant Services, Inc. (UNYTS) encourages and coordinates the donation of human organs and tissue for transplantation. UNYTS is an independent, nonprofit organization designated by the federal government to accept anatomical gifts for transplantation and /or medical research. Established as an organ procurement organization in December 1981, UNYTS added tissue services to its operation in 1987. The Buffalo Eye Bank and Research Society (founded in 1945) merged into UNYTS in November 1993. This merger enhanced our commitment to provide the community with the gifts of sight and the second chance for life presented by tissue and organ donation for transplantation. UNYTS is proud to be one of only six agencies in the United States, and the only one in New York Stae, with three major service divisions -- Organ Services, Tissue Services, and Eye Bank Services.

Mission: Our commitment is to excellence in serving the community by promoting organ, tissue, and eye donation while maintaining the highest level of dignity, integrity, and respect for those who give the gift of life.

Unique or creative organ donation promotion strategies:
We have a curriculum guide which was developed for use by middle and high school teachers. We have a poster contest during NOTDAW for middle and high school students. The winning design is used on promotional materials.
