The organization
and its mission:
The Transplant Resource Center of Maryland, Inc., (TRC), is a non-profit, federally-designated organ procurement organization (OPO) in the U.S. TRC is dedicated to providing advocacy, family support, and comprehensive public and professional education. TRC is committed to organizational excellence to enhance the organ, tissue, and allocation processes.
Like all OPOs, TRC is federally designated by the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS). As a licensed tissue bank, TRC’s Tissue Services department is
registered with the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). TRC is a member of the United
Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS), a government-chartered nationwide network
operating under HHS. (www.unos.org). TRC is guided by a publicly represented board
of members of the Maryland Community.
The TRC was incorporated in 1979 (Originally the Greater Baltimore Organ Procurement
and Perfusion Center [GBOPPC], fully incorporated as the Maryland Organ Procurement
Center [MOPC] in 1983, merged with the University of Maryland Tissue Bank and
Laboratory in 1990 to become The Transplant Resource Center of Maryland [TRC].
The TRC's staff of 95 combined full and part staff is based in Baltimore and is governed by a 23 member Board of Trustees which includes representation from the two Maryland transplant centers and the general public.
The TRC provides organ and tissue donation and recovery services, hospital donor program development, and community education to 36 hospitals and the over three million citizens living in all of Maryland with the exception of Charles, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties.
The TRC is responsible for: evaluating medical suitability of potential donors, offering families the option of organ and tissue donation and supporting their wishes, managing the clinical needs of organ donors, coordinating surgical recovery teams, participating in the surgical recovery of organs and tissue, processing allograft skin, distributing organs and tissues for transplantation and/or research, and increasing donor awareness and participation through public and professional education.

Educational programming in local high schools, campaigns with church community, Heather Ann Ricci Golf Event, Chalfant Memorial Jam, and annual Donor Remembrance Ceremony. Motor Vehicle Administration "thank you" cards, "Thank you for calling the Maryland donor hotline" post cards (for hospital personnel).
