Tacrolimus: Use during pregnancy

Please check with you Transplant Physician for updated information. This information provided for reference purposes only.

Tacrolimus (FK-506; Prograf) is drug used as an immunosuppressant in transplant patients. Animal experiments have shown that tacrolimus may result in miscarriage. Since this drug is relatively new, there is little data in pregnant humans. What data is available shows that premature delivery may be more common when pregnant women are on this drug. There are no reports of increased birth defects or growth retardation, but too few cases have been reported to declare this drug safe.

Tacrolimus has been reported to cause kidney damage and high potassium levels in the newborn baby, presumably due to crossing the placenta.
