James Brown, nominee for chapter president, lives in Cumberland Foreside, Maine. Jim works in investment management and also serves as treasurer and trustee of the Maine Historical Society. A liver recipient himself, he is a patient volunteer for the Maine Medical Center. "Patients need a voice in this whole process. Each recipient should take some time to give something back," urges Jim.
Ken Lifton, nominee for vice-president, lives in Wilmington, MA. Ken is past president of the TRIO - Nation's Capital chapter. He also sits on the board of our parent group in Washington, D.C., and chairs their chapter council. His enthusiasm emphasizes his desires for all those waiting and for all transplantees. Ken had a kidney transplant 6 years ago.
Sally Johnson, nominee for secretary, lives in Lexington, MA. She is a former English teacher who has been doing extensive volunteer work in the new TRIO office. She decided it was finally time to get more involved after hearing Faith Kaplan, a donor mother, speak on behalf of donor families. "So many people just don't know how well we recipients are after transplantation. I'm always happy to tell people that it works." Sally had a liver transplant in September 1992.
John Cederstrom, nominee for treasurer, lives in Lanesboro, MA. John is looking forward to his second term as treasurer. He is enjoying retirement from 30 years as a field worker with Boy Scouts of America. John comes into the Wakefield office from western Massachusetts once a week. He is also a hospital visitor and involved with support groups in his community. John had a liver transplant three years ago.
James Tynan, nominee for assistant treasurer, is a resident of Bedford, MA. Jim is now retired, but spends many hours working for TRIO. He is active with the Speaker's Bureau and has appeared frequently as a spokesperson for the American Red Cross and New England Organ Bank. Jim had a liver transplant five years ago.
In accordance with our bylaws, the election will take place at our "annual meeting," which coincides with our July chapter meeting. Once elected, officers will serve a 2-year term. Please make a special effort to attend the July meeting to show your support of the new team. (Voting will take place at all meetings.) For members who can't attend, we have enclosed a proxy statement which gives Martin Smith or your named designee the right to cast your vote. Please sign and return the proxy to the office as soon as possible.
The TRIO scholarships have become an annual tradition. They are offered to organ/tissue candidates, recipients, or donor family members who have a financial need, are enrolled in an accredited school for continuing education, and have a grade point average of 2.5 or better. Applicants must submit a statement of educational objectives and letters of recommendation, and must use the scholarship during the 1996-97 academic year. Applications will be evaluated and winners selected by the scholarship committee.
Ortho Biotech's program, entitled "Scholarships for the Future," commemorates the company's 10 years in transplantation. Ten prizes of $1,000 each will be awarded to U.S. citizens under 18 who were born after a parent received a transplant. Children must be nominated by a transplant surgeon, physician, nurse, coordinator, or administrator. Multiple nominations are acceptable Winners of the Ortho prizes will be selected by random drawing.
For more information on both programs and a copy of the appropriate forms, contact the office. Deadline for both applications is July 15, so don't dilly-dally!
This is a great location and a great time of year (Maine has two seasons: winter and July). We hope that members from all over the 6-state area will be able to attend and enjoy it. It will be a great opportunity to make new acquaintances and renew old ones, which is part of the fun of belonging to an organization like ours.
Bring your own food for the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, or whatever) and one dish to share (salad, nibbles, dessert, etc.) Plates, napkins, utensils, and drinks will be provided by TRIO New England.
If you are planning to attend, please call the office at 617-224-1270 by July 20 so we'll know how many to expect. Detailed directions and a map are available. See you there (and don't forget your sunscreen).
Francis was a member of a donor family, Joan and Helen were transplant candidates, and Deborah was a transplant recipient. All were members of long-standing.
We extend our sincerest sympathy to their families and friends, who we know miss them greatly.
Last, but far from least, we congratulate Patricia Coulston (kidney, MMC), Phil Kissel (heart, B&W), and Brendan Woodworth (heart, Children's) on their 1-year anniversary. (Brendan was only 2 months old when he received his transplant last year.)
We wish you all a happy, healthy summer.
As a testimony to the value of their gifts, three recipients' stories were told. Brenda Butler Hamlett, who received a heart transplant, Laurie Busa, mother of a heart valve recipient, and Suzi Holmes, liver recipient, told moving stories about the impact of transplantation on their lives and the lives of those around them.
After their remarks, donor families were called to the front of the room and, while Suzi Holmes read the names of the donors, Jaime Busa and Marcia Bujan presented thank-you booklets and certificates.
On display at the ceremony were pictures of many of the donors and a section of the National Donor Family Quilt.
It was an emotional day for all who attended, but we hope is was a day of healing for donor families and that they left feeling loved and appreciated.
The organizers of this event did a wonderful job and we thank them. Plans are in the works to conduct recognition ceremonies throughout New England.

Many people in our communities are just not sure about donation even though they have taken the cards at the Registry office. Some do not know that they must also inform their families of their decision. The new slogan is "Share your life. Share your decision."
Please offer to set up one of these tables in your community. Call us and we can help you with the plans. Spread the word!
