After my liver transplant 10 years ago, I had the good fortune to meet for about a year with other recipients and their families at the hospital where I had my surgery. It was wonderful to have that informal arena to discuss our concerns and reactions to our individual transplant experiences. The group disbanded, however, when more and more recipients came from further away and returned to their local hospitals for follow-up.
Because I missed the rewards of regularly sharing this common ground with fellow organ recipients, I began self-publishing Talking It Over in 1989. It has been fondly referred to as a "support group by mail" and consists of the anonymous letters of transplant recipients from across the U.S. who have gone through the transplant process. Being able to reach the patients and families who most benefit from reading this publication has been an arduous process due to the confidential nature of patient medical information. Until now, word-of-mouth has been the primary way in which people have learned of the existence of Talking It Over.
It is my hope that this homepage will provide more recipients, their families and medical professionals with the opportunity to avail themselves of the worthwhile information and the supportive comments and exchanges this publication provides.
The subscription fee of $12 has remained constant for the seven years of publication in order to make it as affordable as possible to all who wish not only to read its letters but to write them as well. Below are a few excerpts from previous issues:
