On June 20-21, 1996, Kim Brown, a local kidney transplant recipient, will carry the Olympic Torch through Washington, D.C. She will be one of 5,500 Community Hero Torchbearers in the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay. The National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital Area nominated her as a torchbearer. Community Hero Torchbearers are selected based on: outstanding volunteer work; community leadership; acts of kindness and extraordinary accomplishments. Kim was a gold medalist in the skiing event at the 1995 U.S. Winter Transplant Games in Aspen, CO -- only three months after her third kidney transplant. She is the Membership Services Coordinator for TRIO and serves on the Board of the Transplant Foundation. Congratulations Kim!!!!!
The third annual National Donor Recognition Ceremony will be held on April 14, 1996, to honor America's organ and tissue donors. Each of us who is a recipient, or a family member of a recipient, is keenly aware of how precious life is. We are reminded every day that we owe our lives and the quality of our lives to the generosity of a donor and his/her family members. Please join us in giving thanks to those special people who made it possible for a growing number of recipients to have a growing number of tomorrows.
Sponsored by their local procurement organizations, donor families will travel to the Washington, D.C. area from around the country to participate in this program honoring and remembering loved ones. It is especially important for recipients and our families to attend this program to demonstrate our support for and personally express our appreciation to participating donor family members who are attending as representatives of all donor families throughout the Nation.
Last year more than 40 organ procurement organizations sponsored families to participate in the ceremony. Among them were the Nicholas Green family whose son's organs were donated in Italy after he was fatally wounded by a gunshot, and Mr. Chester Szuber who received his daughter's heart. As in years past, TRIO of The Nation's Capital Area Chapter will present donor family members with a rosebud bouquet, and the Central Pennsylvania Coalition on Donation will give each family a medal honoring their donors.
The presence of recipients and our families is a vitally important element of the program. We hope to see you there. There is no fee to attend the Ceremony, however, you must be registered with the National Donor Family Council which is handling registration for this program. To obtain a registration form, call or write to Ms. Kathleen Casey at: National Donor Family Council/NKF, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016, phone: 212-889-2210 fax: 212-779-0068

The 1996 National Donor Recognition Ceremony promises to be a very special and memorable event. We hope many TRIO members will attend. Mark your calendars now!
The February General Meeting, presided over by Linda Cheatham, featured a transplant recipients panel. The meeting was attended by more than 35 recipients, candidates, and support participants. The panel consisted of Brian Rothermel (heart), Christine Wilson (kidney/pancreas), Sandy Tirnauer (double lung), Jim Dueppen (liver) and Daryl Hollis (kidney) with Al Leon (heart) as moderator.
The large turnout was gratifying and all the exceptional panel members told their transplant stories with warmth, humor and compassion. The candidates in the audience asked many questions and it is felt that the entire evening was a most worthwhile experience. Because of the popularity of the program, it is recommended that such a program be on our calendar at least once a year.
On February 21-23 meetings were held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, DC. The first day of the meeting was dedicated to UNOS matters, covering such subjects as: patient selection in transplantation; distribution of transplantable organs; and, academic medical center. Another session embraced: scientific advances in xenotransplantation; ethics of patient and donor selection/allocation; power of positive patients; public education; and, organ allocation modeling
The last two days were devoted to DOT matters covering such material as: the legality of donor cards; media coverage; celebrity transplants; coalition (COD) update; DOT legislative program; issues in consent; and cultural and class barriers.
Attendance and interest were high and there was always spirited interchange between audience and presenters.
