Message From The President

Chick Abeles

As I sit looking out my window on this cool, dark and rainy Memorial Day holiday, I am struck by the appropriateness of this holiday from two perspectives. The day is designed to remember those who have given their lives in defense of our country. For the many of us whose lives are extended by transplants, it is also appropriate that we remember and give thanks to those, both living and dead, who have made the continuation of our lives possible. Donor Awareness Week, which has passed, was a series of public events. For reasons I can't quite explain, Memorial Day seems more private, an opportunity for us to think personally about our donor and our donor family and the sacrifices they made. This is perhaps encouraged by the weather, which at least on this day is made for introspection.

But the rain and darkness will pass. It's almost June. Summer will be upon us, with its sunshine and warmth. During the month, one of our members will be carrying the Olympic torch through the city. Three others will be covering 4300 miles and 21 states in One Lap of America, promoting organ donation. Others of us will show off our athletic skills at the annual Chapter picnic to be held at the National Naval Medical Center.

It's true, isn't it, that we recipients need time for both introspection and excitement, just like the rest of the world. We are in all respects, save one, normal. That one respect: we have been required to come face-to-face with our own mortality. So come out in June and help show the world that TRANSPLANTATION WORKS!

MAY GENERAL MEETING FEATURES MEDICARE EXPERT

The May 21st general meeting of the Chapter, held at the WHC, had as its featured speaker Mr. Paul Olenick, Director, Division of Beneficiary and Insurance Issues, Health Care Financing Administration, who addressed attendees on Medicare issues for the transplant community. About 50 member and guests listened as he explained the complex and often confusing rules of Medicare eligibility and benefits for those who have already received transplants and those on a waiting list. Mr. Olenick, who came again by popular demand after addressing the Chapter over a year ago. He urged all in attendance to become familiar with their rights under the various available programs, noting that they often don't fit together very well, and knowledge of the programs is the best protection against losing entitlements. Most kindly, Mr. Olenick offered to assist members with Medicare problems, and to give guidance to those needing help. His telephone number is 410-786-4472.

TRANSPLANT GAMES
by Michelle Chuk

Team Nations Capital, sponsored by FILA, and TRIO Nation's Capital Area Chapter, is eagerly awaiting the upcoming Transplant Games, August 22-25 in Salt Lake City. This year the athletes will enter in a wide variety of sports including swimming, bowling, tennis, fast walking and golf. The 20 athletes have been working hard to raise $15,000, the necessary funds to cover the costs of the trip.

Many of this years athletes braved the heat, the crowds, and the Georgetown traffic to join us at the annual Chili Cookoff at the Washington Harbor Park, May 18. Team members did a great job selling Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and T-shirts. Later this summer, Team Nation's Capital will be involved in a Bowl-A-Thon to raise money. Each team member will be soliciting pledges for the event. We encourage family members, friends, and supporters to participate as well. . The team also has plans to take an awareness walk on the Mall on June 1st at 10:00 a.m.

Corvette Raffle tickets are still available. The drawing for the 1996 Corvette Coupe will be held July 19 in Orlando, Florida. You do not have to be present to WIN!!! If you have questions or are interested in purchasing tickets, making pledges, or want to volunteer your time to support the team in any way call Michelle at the NKF (202) 244-7900

HELPFUL TIPS

Check with your HMO or health insurer before you go on vacation so you know what to do in an emergency when you are away from home.

Plan ahead for medical emergencies and times your doctor may not be reachable. Ask your doctor where to call and where to go in case of emergency. Anticipate medical-care needs before the weekend -- do not ignore symptoms during the week that might become emergencies on the weekend.

Painless adhesive bandage removal: Soak a cotton ball in baby oil and wipe it around the sides of the bandage. In about 10 minutes, the adhesive will be softened -- making bandage removal easy and painless.

LUNCH BUNCH

The Lunch Bunch will be at 12:00 noon on Wednesday., June 19th, at the Sizzler Restaurant in Arlington: 2130 N. Glebe Road (one block south of Lee Highway on Glebe). We extend an invitation to everyone interested in organ transplantation to join us. For more information call Claude Brady at 703-534-7029.
