In last month's message, written on a cool, cloudy and damp Memorial Day holiday, I commented on the private nature of that day and the opportunity it gave us to think privately and personally about our donors and their families. As I write this column, I am struck by the opposite thought. Summer is upon us. Hot sun, high humidity, crashing thunderstorms, light and noise. Nothing private or quiet about this season. And, in keeping with our seasonal cycles, NCAC has just celebrated with its annual summer picnic. Held (through the kindness of member Ken Moritsugu) on the beautiful picnic grounds at the National Naval Medical Center, the event gave over 100 TRIO members and their families an opportunity to pig out with impunity. It was, I'm delighted to say, a meal designed for satiation, not emaciation, and very likely would be frowned upon by our dietitians. For those with the strength to move after lunch, there were volleyball, water-balloon toss, softball, and other activities.
Adding to the clamor were cheers and kudos for four members
who had, during
the prior two weeks, demon- strated their skills in diverse -- and noisy --
ways. The One Lap adventures of Linda Cheatham (accompanied by
her sister
Peggy) and Mike and Pilar Garrett are chronicled elsewhere in this
Newsletter.
Their barely-muffled racing machines and stylish racing suits, both
sporting the
TRIO emblem, were displayed at the picnic. And Local Heroine Kim
Brown (also
chair of the Picnic Committee and our official hostess) came with the
glittering
Olympic torch in hand, modeling her official torchbearer uniform.
As I said, summer is a noisy public time. TRIO's recent activities
are illustrative. Pretty soon Independence Day will be upon us, with its
fireworks and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Capitol. Hooray
for
summer! Make a glad noise for transplants!
With this issue, our intrepid Newsletter editor Lora Steed retires. We thank Lora for her dedicated service, as she goes on to increased professional responsibilities. We are looking for a volunteer or volunteers to take Lora's place. It's fun -- and the position puts you right in the middle of local transplant activities. Also, there's lots of help from other volunteers. If you'd like to hear more about it, call Lora and/or our Chapter Secretary Nancy Brady .
On June 20th, Kim Brown, Chapter member, had the honor of being an Olympic Torchbearer in Washington D.C. At 5:30 pm, under perfect conditions, Kim ran from 17th and S Streets, NW to Church Street, NW, with family and friends cheering her on. This privilege could not have been given to a more deserving individual who has given so much enthusiasm and dedication to the community on behalf of transplantation. The TRIO/NCAC members are proud for Kim and want to thank her for all the many things she has given to TRIO, National Kidney Foundation and many other organizations. The NCAC is fortunate to have such a dedicated individual in our chapter. Thanks also, Kim, for bringing your torch to the picnic and letting everyone share in your experience -- it was a very special moment for us all.
On June 9-15 another spectacular event, or series of events, took place -- One Lap of America. Chapter members, Mike & Pilar Garrett and Linda Cheatham were competitors in One Lap, which consisted of timed races around 14 tracks across the country. Driving two cars that prominently displayed the TRIO emblem, our racing members effectively promoted organ donation over the 4,300 miles covered throughout the race. Mike's car finished 76th, with Linda's car just a few behind at 85th. Several chapter members, friends and family came out to support and cheer them on at Summit Point, West Virginia, near Charleston, bringing nourishment, energy and enjoyment. The chapter is proud of Linda, Mike and Pilar and their success in promoting transplantation. CONGRATULATIONS for a job well done! P.S. Please don't ask us to pay your speeding tickets.
The Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee now has under consideration designs for the Donor Awareness Stamp. There is a very short time to get our views known to the committee of the importance of a Donor Awareness Stamp. A decision will be made on JULY 10 and the Advisory Committee will select only a limited number of designs for next year. Please write, call or fax the committee expressing your support for a Donor Awareness Stamp and the importance of issuing a stamp in order to help the 48,000 people who are waiting for a transplant and who could be saved if the citizens of our country are more aware of the need for and benefits of organ donation.
