A Friend Within Me

By Randy Ward

There are times when

People join together for life.

As in a lasting marriage

Of a loving husband and wife.

Or proud parents

Holding their new born child

There are times

Of tenderness, so mild.

But these are all victories

Where everyone can win

Not like a wrestling match

Where someone suffers a pin.

An organ transplant

Seems one-sided, too

Someone dies

Another makes it through.

Or is it possible

This is a pessimistic view

Looking at the dark side

Not thinking it through.

The optimist might say

She would have died someday

The Lord took her to heaven

She saved a life today.

To loved ones there’s

Daily heartache and pain

How do they cope

Without going insane?

As a recipient I struggle

More and more over time

Why a young man is gone

And I’m here – there’s no rhyme.

So I live my life

The very fullest and best

Mark is with me each day

And we’re both full of zest.

For you see he’s more

Than a liver in my chest

He’s a friend for life

And the very best.

We walk and talk

About each step we make

And I thank God for each day

And each breath that we take.
